Just a Little White Today...

This post officially marks 75 posts for A Bird in Hand.  It amazes me that I have felt the need to share thoughts/experiences/ideas 75 times!

Today, I just have a couple of pictures to share for Faded Charm's White Wednesday!  Okay...I have to admit that this white stuff is starting to grow on me!!  I'm finding it very peaceful.  I may even try a room of it one day if the right home and room presents itself.  That is MAJOR for this color-loving girl to admit!!  I am especially digging the idea of a white painted floor.  You must check out the gorgeous kitchen at Pink Satin Sashes.  The handmade cabinets....the white painted floor....really beautiful.

I digress (as I often do).....

From one of my favorite blogs...Blomsterverkstad.
Do you see that painted floor....and the
ceiling?  I like the dash of color here and there,
like the green bench in the foreground.

Another picture from the same website.
Minna has such incredible style.
How many of you, like me, long to fly to
Sweden to take some of her classes?
My bucket list is getting very long!
I had hoped to include pictures of my vintage secretary turned art supply storage, but it appears the pictures are in my home computer.  I think I'll save them for Vintage Inspiration Friday instead.

Many wonderful Wednesday wishes to you!!

Searching for a Blog

Like most of you out there in bloggy-land, I often go from blog-to-blog, clicking on new blogs on others' blog rolls.  You know how we can all get so carried away that we don't even remember where we started!

Well.....I am longing to find one that I stumbled upon a few times and for some reason, did not "follow" or even make it a favorite.  I know not her name, but I do know her subject.  This lady (maybe even a husband/wife team) plants beautiful plants in the most unexpected containers.....hats, shoes, dishes, pianos (I know!), other musical instruments, etc.  I admired her creativity as I had done a few myself and was so inspired to see her incredible work as well.  She went so far beyond what I even imagined.

Does anyone out there know what blog I might be describing???

These are pictures of the booth I did a few years back.  It was a great hit at this particular show.  I always incorporate plants as I think they soften edges and bring peace to a room.  They made me feel like this little booth was "me."

I was really pleased with the overall affect.
I feel it was unique compared to my neighbors.

One can't have a garden gate without a beautiful vine
to give it a hug!!  I put plants in the barrel too.
That architectural element in the back was the first
piece that I had ever painted and sold!

Here....an herb resides in a French glass canister.
This chest now lives in a cabin in the Carolina's.
The door to the right is an old screen door that I painted and
put a mirror behind.  It lives at my friend, Dotty's, house.

Pineapple mint planted in an old oil can.
I really like that one!
Charms hanging from faux apple blossom
branches from Cathy Penton Designs.
I also had plants in vintage plant stands too.  For the back-drop of my booth, I copied pictures onto pages of old books (or left them plain), punched holes in the tops and bottoms of the pages (I had to use clear hole reinforcers as some of the papers were so fragile), tied them together with string, then hung them from the frame my husband made me from pipe.  I was very pleased with the result.  I really did not want to see my neighbors and wanted clear deliniation of my own space.  The air conditioning blew them around gently. I was surprised how many people asked about it....even had a couple of offers/inquiries to see if it was for sale.  It was not.  I gladly shared my "how-to" though.

Anyway....back to the blog search.  If you have any ideas as to whom I am referring....please let me know!!  Many thanks to you all.

P.S.  I have this verse typed on a little piece of paper at my desk here at work.  It especially good for me and where I am today:  "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not unto your own understanding.  In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path."  Provers 3:5-6

Tinker House by d.reyne

I have to share this with you.  One of my favorite blogs to follow ~~  d.reyne ~~  has posted her almost finished greenhouse she has dubbed "Tinker House."  Here are a few images, but really, you just have to pay her a visit.  And, to thank all who visit her and have become followers, she is offering a Give-Back as well.  It is her way of saying thanks to the 200 followers she now has.  Wow!

But look......

What is very cool about this little building is that it was made completely of salvaged materials and found objects.  No trips to Home Depot (okay....maybe for nuts and bolts and nails).  Anyone who knows me will agree this is definitely A Bird in Hand-style as well.  I have sent many pictures of the many stages of this project to my darling husband sweetly suggesting that a little addition to our cottage-style shed would be just the coolest...ala Tinker House-style.  I can even get my hands on a very cool barn door.....hint-hint, deary. What I really want to know is how she hung the burlap drapes and will they get hung up each time she slides the doors open?

Really....I just can't get enough!  I'm thinking about making one of the pictures my screensaver just to drool over it some more.  (sigh......)

Seriously, though, you will not be disappointed in her entire blog.  Please scroll through old posts as well and see her studio.  It is luscious!  Oh....did I mention d.reyne writes TWO blogs??  Please see her work at Horton's of Tipton as well.  Talk about getting inspiration!

I see a road trip in my future!!  Care to join me?

New ETSY Shop!

I am excited to say that not only am I getting knee-deep in blogland, but now I have my toe in the water for my Etsy shop too.  I will be loading my few little goodies this weekend, but you get to have a sneak peak.

This great little side table was a great find.  It was mustard yellow when I found it and I knew I would change that.  What I did not realize was that it was solid mahogany!  A shame to paint it again, I know, but that yellow was a dickens go get off.  I usually do most of it with sanding, but it wouldn't budge.  So out with the paint stripper and a dozen coats later, it was finally at a point where I could work with it.  I feel this table is an antiqued aqua/soft blue, however in some light, it takes on more of a greenish tint.  It will be darling next to chair stacked with your favorite reading material or even next to a twin bed.  Furniture will only be going to locals, but don't worry.  There will be plenty of other goodies also.  P.S.  I will also be offering my services to "charm" a piece of furniture or architectural finding to your liking.  Something to think about!

I love this old jar with the tin lid.  Inside are ten little pears.  The glass has a few bubbles in it, which I think adds to the charm.  (Pears are included with this item.)

I fell in love with this old baby formula bottle filled with vintage shoe buttons.  I had never seen such!

Old dome flower frog for the garden lover!

I have to say that these napkins are my favorite!  I am a major cloth napkin lover and keep an old metal basket full of them to use every day instead of paper.  These lovelies are sweet.  Cream with a yellow jacquard banding.  It is hard for me to part with these six.

And lastly (for now) this adorable tiny cut glass cruet with stopper.  It is tiny and full of charm.  The swirled buttom makes it sit slightly off tilt, but I think it adds to the charm.

Measurements, prices, and more views of each will be included on the Etsy page.  I hope to have these loaded by the end of the weekend.  I have no idea what to expect from there, but I know I am excited (slump....BE GONE!)!.

For now....until I get a button from this page to that page, please use the link here:  http://www.abirdinhandshop.etsy.com/.

I hope to see you there!!  (Sorry for the strange spacing on this post.  My granddaughter is fussing and my play time is over!!  ;~) )

From My Little Corner...

I have mentioned our sunroom addition on several occasions.  Here is one corner....my favorite corner.  I don't get to enjoy it very often.  It seems like I am always running, but it is MY GOAL to spend 15 minutes here....at least.....a day.

The item of most interest right now to me is the secretary top.  I found this beauty a few years ago in a shop that refinishes and paints just about everything they get their hands on. I guess I do too, but not in the same style. They had not gotten to this piece yet and I said I love it as it is!  Even though I instantly fell deep and hard for this piece, it was intended for my booth.  I was excited to be offering it as I found it so unusual.  I intended to give it a good sand, then repaint it, giving it the A Bird in Hand treatment.  The first sanding got through some of the grime.  Inside, it is still the original wood and varnish finish. The store where I found it offered it on this old iron stand.  The hubster said it looks like an old fish tank stand.  I said it looks perfect to me!  (Oh, did I mention, it is now a keeper?  I just can't part with it!)

The more I sanded, the more this little feature was revealed to me.

Look at the aqua blue trim!  It was under the creamy white and I was thrilled!!  I knew right then and there that this piece was already close to perfect to me.  So I continued this plan, sanding, cleaning, and revealing its special qualities.

After having perused Where Bloggers Create II and Where Women Create, I had a brain storm.  Why not make the sunroom my place to create?  It has to still be functional as a room in our house, so I can't have too much out in the open.  This piece is full of little nooks and crannies perfect for all my art supplies I had stowed away in the bottom of my bookcase.  While I love my bookcase, for me to do any project means lugging out everything just to see what I have....not very user friendly.  This past weekend, we finally brought this beauty home from our storage area as I was just itching to get my hands on all my goodies and get them organized.  Here is what I did....

I had forgotten I had some (most) of this stuff!  I'm so excited to have these goodies at my fingertips now.  I have been going over a few things that I want to play with.  I really like using my stamps and tags, and am looking forward to playing with them.  I also have what used to be an old kitchen work table that I want to bring out next to be my work table.  It will be under the main windows of the sunroom creating the most perfect view!  I always think of Diane Keaton's view from her writing desk in Somethings Gotta Give.  Can you imagine?

This picture does not do it justice, but I know you remember.....just lovely.....

Anyhoo.....when not in "art" mode, my little corner looks like this:

Everything all neat and tidy, and in its place.

The only thing missing here is me!!!

Secret Leaves Paperworks

When I first started "A Bird in Hand" it was meant to be as my card read:  "Vintage and whimsical furnishings to feather your nest...garden...soul."  I really enjoyed searching for products that I wanted to represent and wanted to represent me.  Through this wonderful network that blogging is, I ran across Secret Leaves Paperworks.  Please look at their offerings and how they create what they do.

The night before my Australian friend, Glenda, was to leave, we went through my "goodie box."  I still have many treasures from my early venture and I wanted to share some of those with her.  A vintage photo album with an old beautiful sheet music book cover was among these.  It was a Secret Leaves creation that I was thrilled to share with Glenda.

Today I looked through their website and blog.  I was thrilled to see their new creations.  Their products are still absolutely beautiful.  I know that if life leads me to fulfill my dream of my own little store someday, their lovelies will definitely grace my shelves.

The Glenda Project

(Reprinted from my wordpress.com blog dated May 3, 2010.)

When I was in first grade, living in Niagara Falls, I was a Brownie. We did the typical Brownie things. We made a “sit upon” which basically was a recycled shower curtain folded over newspaper that we loop stitched around the edges to hold it in place. It was used to literally sit upon rather than sit on the floor, or grass, or whatever. I had that thing for years it seems.

One of the more interesting activities was being told we would be participating with a troop in Australia and become pen pals with a Brownie there. Australia sounded very exotic to my six-year-old imagination and I thought the girl’s name I would get would be equally exotic. I was handed a slip of paper about the size of a fortune from a cookie that read, “Glenda Dunstan.” That did not sound very exotic to me and I remember asking if I could try again. I was told no. I guess she already had my name too. Okay….Glenda it is. Our assignment was to write an introductory letter to this person and let chance take it from there. This all occurred somewhere around 1969. Mail to and from Australia took about two weeks, each way. My mom proofread my letter making sure it was in my best handwriting and there were no errors. I do remember having to redo it a time or two. It was quite exciting to receive that first letter. Everyone in the family had to read it, look at the stamps, note Glenda’s interesting handwriting and way of speaking (“Mum” for Mom, “holiday” for vacation, etc.).

And a friendship was formed….

Fast forward 41 years (OMG!) and we are STILL friends! There have been segments of years where our writing waxed and waned. We have spoken on the telephone three times during the years. Yes, she has an adorable accent. Interestingly enough, she thinks I have an accent. When the brush fires were ravaging Southern Australia last year, I had to call to make sure she and her family were okay. She lives in Melbourne and luckily were still south of where most of the fires were. She was very touched to know I was worried for her and even more surprised that America was following along with what was going on Down Under.

During the years we each married (she is now Glenda Morris), had children, lost loved ones, survived illnesses (Glenda is a ten-plus-year breast cancer survivor). We now take advantage of the internet and read each other’s responses within hours of writing. Australia is fourteen hours ahead of us, so if she is up late and I am up early, we can almost “instant message.”

In less than one month, I will meet my Australian Brownie pen pal for the very first time. She is traveling to North America (Canada and the US) and will stay with me and my family for seven days!!! This is a miracle to me. It seems almost surreal….that on one hand, I feel I have known her since childhood, but on the other hand, have never really met her at all. What will she think of our American ways? What are American ways, anyways? And how do they differ from Australian ways?

This has spurred a flurry of activity at the Bass household. I live in a modest 50’s style cottage. It is tiny and adorable. There has always been a list of “wouldn’t it be nice to do this to that area” that has, up to about three months ago remained an item on the list. The list now has a name: The Glenda Project. The back porch is now an almost completely enclosed sunroom. The laundry room has been rearranged with a new hot water heater added. A new 12 x 12 shed has been added to the backyard across from the chicken coop. The kitchen pantry has been removed and a very cool antique armoire stands in its place. (Only some…okay one… of the home’s occupants thinks it is very cool.) It is not perfect, but that is part of its charm. If I wanted perfect, I would have bought a new piece. (The French door to the right is now gone as that is where the sunroom is.)

(I forgot to mention that I was told this HAS to be the LAST old piece of furniture I EVER bring into our house. Now how am I supposed to accomplish that? Maybe he was kidding….)

My brief mention of the projects above do nothing to describe the amount of blood, sweat, and tears that have accompanied them. The sunroom was half engulfed in old termite eaten boards and had to be completely removed and replaced before the back half of the house fell off. Why that actually never happened is beyond me. My husband tried very hard to cut his thumb off with the table saw. An ER visit and seven stitches later, he was back at it. Exterior CBS walls had to be drilled and chipped to accommodate the new placement of the dryer vent. And still the work continues….

Maybe one of the Australian ways is not to worry so much over what kind of panty food is kept in or if all the walls are freshly painted or if the almost 50-year- old wood floor has just the right sheen to it. It certainly seems to be an American way, though–or at least this American’s way. As the time of Glenda’s arrival quickly approaches, the list still seems insurmountable. My attitude toward that list has relaxed somewhat. At some point, the focus will shift to what we will do to make my exotic Aussie pal feel welcomed. In the meantime, I still have some painting to do!
